Thanks to its new equipment, the 2016 Scion FR-S costs $400 more. This is Scion's first meaningful update on the FR-S. Changes are, however, minor and include a new cabin trim, new colors, some visual tweaks, additional rearview cameras and a new standard audio system.

Being one of the most affordable sports cars on the market today, the FR-S is light, quick in movement and fun to drive. Scion has equipped it with all the necessary modern conveniences, safety equipment, and technological advancements that offer remarkable driving kinetics.

The FR-S comes with a 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder engine that churns out 200 horsepower. Its standard transmission comes in two: a six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission. Drivers will get a little more power when the car is pumped all the way to its 7,400 rpm redline. However, at 151 pound-feet, it is not exactly a torque monster. The 2.0-liter engine is nevertheless rewarding and comes with that Subaru engine design together with the direct- and port-injection system from Toyota.

Unfortunately, compared to some of its competitors, the Scion FR-S falls short in matters of speed. It lazily gets to 60mph in 7.1 seconds, falling behind Mazda Miata's 5.9 seconds. A test drive reveals a need for about 177-feet of space in order to stop at 70mph and beyond. Its skidpad's lateral grip ranges from 0.86 to 0.96g. The slow speed on the manual could be the result of the less-grippy rubber despite it being faster than the six-speed automatic. The FR-S, however, covers a quarter of a mile in 14.6 seconds at 95mph.

The interior is a bit plasticky. Sitting inside isn't a chore though. There's a sound pipe meant to bring the engine's growl into the cabin but very little noise is heard. At speeds above 70mph, road and wind noise can become quite eminent.

The front seats sit comfortably and are well-bolstered, bringing out the FR-S's shiny interior. There is plenty of leg and headroom, making it unnecessary for the unusually tall to sit in uncomfortable positions in order to fit. The rear seats do offer less space, one that would be best for children and shorter people. Six-footers can, however, fit quite comfortably without feeling cramped.

There isn't much to note on the FR-S' infotainment system. There are, however, a few choices available for Scion drivers. These include keyless entry, climate control, audio, and apps capability and Bluetooth wireless connection.

The vehicle is equipped with standard safety features which include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, standard rearview cameras and six airbags. These and other properties have accrued to the Scion FR-S an overall five-star rating from Federal officials - including four stars in front crash protection.  The IIHS rates it "Good" in almost all categories, giving an "Acceptable" in the FR-S' small overlap frontal category, all still good enough for a Top Safety Pick award.

Key redesigns take place every five years. And, to provide more meaningful distinctions in the shopping process, Scion divides these changes into generations. The most exciting feature for the FR-S is the aftermarket support which includes Scion's dealer-installed suspension upgrades and the Toyota Racing Development engine. However, extra rubber would be a great idea when upgrading its character.
